About

Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, agriculture, fertility, and the sacred law. She presides over the cycle of life and death, grains and the fertility of the earth. As one of the original six Olympians, she holds immense power over the natural world.

Her grief when Hades abducted her daughter Persephone caused all plants to wither and die, bringing the first winter to the world. Only when Persephone returns does spring come again.

Demeter represents the nurturing mother who provides sustenance to all living things, but also the terrible power of nature when her gifts are withdrawn.

Famous Story

When Persephone was taken, Demeter wandered the earth in grief, letting no crops grow. Famine spread until Zeus intervened, but because Persephone had eaten pomegranate seeds in the underworld, she must return there each year—and so winter returns.
