About

Choe Yeong (1316-1388) was the most renowned general of late Goryeo, famous equally for his military prowess and his incorruptible character. His father taught him: "Do not be covetous of gold as of a stone." He lived by this principle his entire life.

While other officials amassed fortunes, Choe Yeong remained poor, wearing the same clothes for years and living simply. Yet his military achievements were legendary—he defeated Japanese pirates, suppressed rebellions, and fought against the Red Turban invasions from China.

His downfall came when he opposed his subordinate Yi Seong-gye (future founder of Joseon). When ordered to attack Ming China, Yi Seong-gye instead marched back to the capital in the Wihwado Retreat. The aged Choe Yeong fought to the end but was captured and executed. His integrity made him a symbol of loyalty and incorruptibility.

Famous Story

When Choe Yeong was finally captured after Yi Seong-gye's coup, he refused to bow or show fear. Asked if he had any last wishes, he said only that he hoped Korea would one day defeat the foreign powers threatening it. Even enemies respected his integrity.
