About

Asclepius is the god of medicine and healing, son of Apollo and the mortal Coronis. His skill in medicine became so great that he could even restore the dead to life, making him one of the most beloved figures in Greek mythology.

He learned the healing arts from the wise centaur Chiron and developed them beyond anything the world had seen. His staff, entwined with a single serpent, remains the symbol of medicine to this day.

Zeus struck Asclepius down with a thunderbolt, fearing that his ability to resurrect the dead would upset the natural order. Yet the god of healing was so beloved that Zeus later placed him among the stars and allowed him to continue receiving worship.

Famous Story

Asclepius raised Hippolytus from the dead, which angered Hades who complained to Zeus about mortals escaping death. Zeus struck Asclepius with a thunderbolt, but Apollo's grief was so great that Zeus made Asclepius immortal and placed him among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus.
